Inspired by Uma Thurman's depiction of poison ivy in the 197 renditions of Batman & Robin, the capsule collection name after the character has launched. Although initially criticised, the film has become a kitsch classic for many film aficionados.
Thurman plays the antagonist to Batman & Robin - whose only wish is for mother earth to take over the planet. Little did she know that would've been very popular in this modern climate. Her powers came to fruition in a scientific accident and uses her allure and beauty to kill those around her.
INSPIRATION BEHIND THE CAPSULE COLLECTION
Thurman's character wears an outerwear piece that the MADE-TO-ORDER Poison Ivy Coat draws inspiration from. You can see the coat in the clip above.
Poison Ivy is used as a reference in a lot of Lula's work. If you're familiar with her launch collection depicting actors playing 12 different roles, you may remember the neon gang. These four neon individuals wore pieces referenced in the movie - which is also where our limited edition UPCYCLED collection Poison Ivy is recycled with.
UPCYCLED - MADE FROM RECYCLED MATERIALS
The exciting challenge of creating this capsule collection was using leftover material. Poison Ivy is a part of our UPCYCLED program, using fabrics in the showroom leftover from prior collections to create limited edition pieces that are sometimes part of labelled capsules, and sometimes a limited edition accessory to go with the current collection.
One of our items, the Poison Ivy Coat is not only an UPCYCLED piece, it is also MADE-TO-ORDER. The outwear happens to take a great deal of craftsmanship to make. We part-take in slow fashion, and as such we don't want entire pieces to go to waste. It's an awesome coat but it takes an awful long to create. Our slow fashion approach to the business limits us from creating too many pieces from any collection. In this case, we also have a limited amount of fabric, which is why we also refer to it as a limited selection. Because that is what it is.
Lula drew inspiration from the characters low-key sustainability approach, as it fits into what we do at the studio every day. In addition to this, what does poison ivy mean to her? To stay cautious. You never know what's around the corner, and no matter how exciting and positive it's likely to be, it's always good to keep an open mind and be curious - just like when you're around poison ivy. You never know, the kiss of nature might change the outcome of your life.
